• Basics

The FreeRange screen is divided into three parts:

    - Top status bar. This contains the tracker control and the total number of unread articles on the phone.

    - Screen. This contains the main screen

    - Bottom status bar. This contains clickable icons (if you have a pointer device), the network progress bar and busy indicator.

  • Tracker control

The tracker control is designed to help you understand where you are in the screen hierarchy.

Each screen description is added to the tracker with '/' between items. The control is truncated as necessary to allow it to fit within the screen width.

  • Screen icons

Here is a list of icons that you will find within FreeRange and what they represent:

This indicates that FreeRange is in Flight Mode.

This indicates that you can travel up the screen hierarchy.

This indicates that you can travel down the screen hierarchy.

This indicates that a folder is open and you can collapse it.

This indicates that an article has a stored Full Story

This indicates that this article's stored Full Story was automatically deleted because there was not enough room in the Full Story cache. This can be increased via Settings -> Cache.

This clickable icon allows you go to the previous article Abstract or Full Story.

This icon is displayed when selecting items from a list to remove.

This clickable icon allows you access the Update menu.

This clickable icon allows you launch the current link in the phone's web browser.

  • Progress bar and spinning arrows

The network progress bar is in the lower status bar and gives you feedback how much data has been downloaded for Update or Full Story. Since FreeRange has two background threads that can request data at the same time, the progress bar may appear to shift back and forth.

The spinning arrow icon appears whenever data is loaded from the device and is formatted for display (ie. You request the Articles screen and data has to loaded from the phone's memory to do so).

  • Image thumbnails

Images thumbnails are loaded for the Abstract and Full Story screens. Before they are loaded you see a square placeholder. Then, as they are downloaded, each placeholder displays its progress. Finally the placeholders are replaced by a thumbnail.
